Final Florist

Quick update! 

This post will be much shorter than usual.  I finally picked a florist, & the one that I did not choose made it very easy for me to walk away from them.

I already felt like Jakob at Beyond Details was backing me into a corner when he offered me a discount that was only valid for one day, but then yesterday I received an email from him saying that he had another bride looking at the August 4th date & he wanted to make sure that it was okay with me to let that date go.  I replied, very professionally, that I had been having trouble making a decision & that I didn't want to take away from their business in any way, but that him emailing me saying that he had another client for that day made it easier & that he could go ahead & book them. 

He responded a few hours later saying that he would much rather do my wedding since I am already one of their brides & it would be easier for him to do the wedding at the venue they own.  He said that I had until lunch-time today to get back with him if I had a change of heart.  I'm not usually comfortable rushing into decisions even if I know it's exactly what I want, but I was already having pretty big doubts about BD doing our flowers.  Whether he actually has another bride or not, I don't know.  I'm starting to think that all could have been made up so that I would hurry up & book them.  But the whole situation did not sit right with me, so I replied that I had already booked the other florist as soon as I turned him down & made a deposit today.  I did it in the nicest, most professional way that I knew how because we still have to work with BD for our catering & wedding site. 

I am pleased to announce that The Garden Gate Florist in Monroe will be doing all of our flowers & decorations :)

Shout out to my MOH, Haley for running all over creation (& getting lost in the ghetto) with me today to get the deposit & everything taken care of!  I truly don't know what I would do without you!

One last thing: All of the "C"s that I painted to go on our Christmas tree next year.  Do the colors look familiar?  & I got all turquoise & red ornaments too!

Six Christmases

We've got the Vince Vaughn/Reese Witherspoon movie Four Christmases beat by 2...Winning!

It may even take as long to read as the movie takes to watch...sorry friends!

I am just dying to make the post next year called "Our First Christmas."  I mean, we have already had 3 other Christmases together & this one doesn't really count as a "first"...it's more like a pre-first Christmas. 

Anyway, somehow (I have no idea how), we found time to spend with all four of our extended families this year as well as celebrating with just immediate.  I guess I could just go in order :)

CHRISTMAS #1

We had dinner with Anthony's dad's side of the family (The Camps) at his uncle's house on the Tuesday before Christmas.  One thing that I love about these celebrations is that they never happen on the actual holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).  For a couple who is trying desperately to work out enough time for each family, that is a life-saver!  My other favorite part about Christmas with the Camps...the games.  When you first arrive, an index card with a celebrity name is pinned to your back & you have to ask questions about the person to guess.  The first year I came, I was Lindsay Lohan (Anthony was Michael Phelps).  This year, I was Cameron Diaz.  I can't remember who Anthony got because I was so focused on the fact that it would have been awesome had he been given the name "Tim Tebow" :)  After dinner, we all go into the living room to play another game.  A large picture of a celebrity is covered up with a bunch of numbered sticky notes (like 40 of them).  As your turn in the circle of people comes around, you have to pick a number, answer the question associated with the number, & if you get it right the matching sticky note gets taken down.  The closer to the face, the harder they are.  I think I only got one right...if that :(  But then Mitchell guessed the person (Bruce Willis) within maybe 10 sticky notes being taken down.  Another highlight of the evening was the fact that Anthony's parents were able to pull Andrew up on Skype.  We couldn't figure out why in the world it kept disconnecting...until Micheal (Anthony's cousin) pointed out that whenever the phone rings it interrupts the Internet.  Then, he showed us how to disconnect the phone (a tactic he learned during Fantasy Baseball Draft) so that it wouldn't disconnect the computer anymore.  (But then when I went into the kitchen & sat on the phone, I thought I had turned it on...he had left it on so it would be off the hook...so I cut it off & they lost him again...oops.)  I also made ornaments (where you put acrylic paint in & shake it up) to give out at the end of the night, but they were a complete failure.  The paint slipped off the glass, wasn't dry, was leaking out the top, etc.

CHRISTMAS #2 

On Thursday afternoon after Anthony got off work, we drove up to Raleigh, NC to visit with my dad's side of the family (The Franks').  I'm not sure if it was traffic or rain or both, but the drive took forever.  I mean, it's normally not a walk in the park just because it's such a long distance, but this time it took us almost 7 hours.  & Anthony was really tired from having to get up so ridiculously early for work, so I ended up driving almost halfway there...did I mention that I'm mildly afraid of expressway driving?  (See picture above of him in my pink blankie sleeping in the passanger seat.)  By the time we got there, everyone has finished dinner (we told them to go ahead) & I could tell my Nana was less than pleased that we were so late.  Never a dull moment.  In my defense, nothing could really have been done to help it.  Anyway, we spent Thursday & Friday night up there with the family & left early Saturday afternoon.  The time inbetween was spent playing Phase10, Dominoes, & MarioKart & watching Gold Rush, another new show that Anthony has loved & gotten me to like (along with anything NFL, Lizard Lick Towing, Swamp People, etc.).  He's pretty happy about getting more control of the TV :)  It was really nice to be able to go up there & spend some time with my family.  I normally only get to go once a year at Christmas, but this year I also went up right after we got engaged in May.  It is truly one of my favorite places in the world to be.  I know things are going to change a lot after Anthony & I get married (& in some ways they already have), but I think Raleigh with my aunt, uncle & cousins will always feel like home. 

Another highlight of the trip was most definitely when my Pop Pop gave Anthony the potato howitzer.  (Basically 3 or 4 feet of industrial-strength PVC pipe...you shove a potato down the top with a broom stick, spray aerosol hairspray into the bottom for 8-Mississippi, close it up, light it & BOOM.  Potato going 500 yards at 300 MPH.  Not exactly something you can take to the park...more like my grandparents' 50-acre pasture land!  This thing gets talked about at literally every family function & is like the men of the family's burried treasure.  There are only about a million stories about it & I honestly never even knew that he still had it.  He pulled Anthony down to the basement for a "talk" which quite worried me at the time, but the next day he summoned him to again sneak down to his workshop (without my half-brother seeing, is the most important part, because he would've gone nuts) & run the howitzer out to my car.  It was a proud moment for me, like Anthony really is such a part of the family already :)  Not to mention Dad came through on his promise to get Anthony his own stocking. 

As you can see, it has replaced mine in the middle & I am now on the left end.  Rude!  Just kidding...kind of.

CHRISTMAS #3

When we got back from North Carolina on Saturday, we were an hour earlier than expected (this time the trip was 5 hours & 45 minutes).  Mom yelled for us, sepecifically Anthony, to stay in the kitchen because she was working on something in the living room.  She got him a stocking too, & she was ironing his name onto it :)  When she was giving us our presents, she also gave us an etched-glass ornament (below) & ordered a Christmas tree for us the day after.  It was 50% off & counted as part of our gifts this year! 

I guess this wasn't really a "Christmas" dinner because it was a grilled steak & we opened Anthony's presents from my mom the next day, but it was the one time that we were all sitting down together.

CHRISTMAS #4

Early on Christmas morning, I headed over to Anthony's house to open presents & have breakfast with his parents & Mitchell.  When I got there, all I could see was Anthony frantically trying to pull every single part for his grill-guard out of their boxes.  In the picture you can see the book alllllll about Tim Tebow my dad got me for Christmas.  I'm already finished with it :)

Yep, that's me hugging the cover.  Haha.  Anyway, so excited about what I got from Anthony's parents!  The stuff that relates to this blog: really super soft, nice Ralph Lauren blanket that I can't wait to put on the couch in our future home, this really awesome set of oversized keys, a "C" ornament for our tree next year, & my very own set of "Santa" ornaments that Anthony's mom makes out of dried okra!  Anthony & I also exchanged our presents at his parents' house...a pretty ring for me & a bunch of clothes for him :)

CHRISTMAS #5

After we left breakfast at Anthony's house, I went back home to get ready to go to my mom's side of the family (The Garners).  Anthony joined me shortly, & we ate a ton even though we were still stuffed from breakfast.  Unfortunately, we had to pretty much rush though eating & opening presents because we had to be at our last Christmas at around 2. 

CHRISTMAS #6

We got to Anthony's mom's side of the family (The Smiths) a little late, but that's okay because we weren't having a full meal (thank goodness!).  We sat & munched on some snacky foods (yeah, we were stuffed by the end of the night), especially the buffalo chicken dip.  So good.  At this point, I was feeling really terrible for Mitchell because he got his wisdom teeth taken out on Wednesday & couldn't eat much of anything. 

At least not much of the yummy stuff.  Not to mention the fact that Anthony hit him in the cheek with a phone...he forgot about the fact that it would hurt WAY worse than usual.

As you can see, the sections on each Christmas have gotten shorter & shorter...because at this point we were totally Christmas-ed out!  Lets move on to the couple of days after :) 

We hit up a sales at American Eagle & New York & Company on Monday to use our gift cards for really good deals on clothes.  I even got a few dresses that I can potentially wear to bridal showers!  Yay!  Anthony got some much-needed jeans & shirts.  I waited until Wednesday when he was at work to go shopping for Christmas decorations!  They were all 66% off at Hobby Lobby.  Needless to say, Mandie & I spent almost 3 hours in there yesterday.  Quote of the day from Mandie: "I'm going to buy you the biggest Mason Jar ever for your wedding present.  You'll be able to take a bath in it!"  I spent probably a little bit too much money, but got way better deals than I would be getting next fall while shopping for our tree.  Plus, I foresee not having as much cash to blow on decorations next year, seeing as we'll have to do grown-up things like pay bills. 

All of my purchases from HobLob.  I plan on painting the C's & making ornaments out of them :) (They were 30% off as well.)

I found these glasses when I went to Kroger for groceries (which I hate. Along with pushing a real cart & going through an actual check-out line).  With my Kroger card (another grown up thing that I've done), they were $1 apiece, so I bought a set of 8.  Looks like we've got our drinking glasses for when we get a house!

Flower Fix

...& by "fix", I mean predicament, not solution.

I have a lot of other Christmas-related things to write about later, but I figured that the florist appointments deserved a post of their own, since they were so eventful.  First, I have to come clean about my florist appointment with Beyond Details.  I really only scheduled it out of obligation since that company is already doing out catering, & I figured they might have an edge since they own the venue & will have all day to set up as opposed to only a couple of hours.  However, I was less than impressed when we got to their office.  From what I have already seen so far, they are a lot more modern than my tastes, & I didn't feel quite as though my voice was being heard during the appointment.  Maybe I should start from the beginning:

When we arrived, we were greeted by Jakob, who I have no qualms with on a personal level.  That day, he was sick, so maybe that influenced the way the appointment went?  We sat down & started talking about ideas for the flowers.  (I'm not going to discuss the specifics on what we want to have at our wedding on here because I want our guests to have some level of surprise left; rather, I'll just talk about the way we went about deciding.)  A few of the things he said, I liked.  Some, not so much.  When I didn't like the ideas, he kind of...got offended almost but still leaned in the direction of the ideas he talked about.  Sometimes, when he wanted to show us a picture, we had to walk back into his office, sit at the computer, when come back to the meeting room to talk about it.  I wouldn't have had a problem with this if we had looked at a bunch of pictures at one time, but we ended up having to go back and forth several times.  One thing that Jakob suggested that I did agree with was not having a flower girl or ring bearer.  We don't even really have a girl we're close with who would be old enough (the suggestion is 4-8, but you're encouraged to go closer to the 8-end for behavior reasons) & the flower girl seems more important than the ring-bearer. It seems weird to me that people who are not inviting children to their wedding (due to limited seating & budget, not to mention that we want the adults to have fun & enjoy our day with us, instead of having a lot of "distractions" around) would feature kids as two central aspects of it.  Instead, I think I'll opt for petals gracefully placed down the isle by a florist...& the ring-bearer never actually carries the rings anyway :)

I can't quite put my finger on what bothered me most about the appointment, but I think one thing might sum it up perfectly.  He basically said that he would take what I wanted into consideration when doing the styling, but would also be making sure that it looked the way he wanted it to.  Now, call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure that the bride & the people paying are the only people who it should "look the way they want it to."  Am I right?  That would have been enough to leave me dissatisfied, but then Jakob crunched some numbers to see what all of this was going to cost (I had told him the budget up front).  He  had almost doubled the budget.  Then, when he realized this would be too much, instead of offering ways to fix that, he casually did a few things & brought it down to about 1.67% of the budget.  Still too high, especially given the fact that I didn't feel like I was getting what I wanted.

The next day, I received an email from Jakob with an estimate and an offer.  Basically, he was offering to do the entire thing for 1.33% of the budget, but I had to accept by the end of the day.  He is used to me making quick decisions, because I decided to reserve & deposit on the venue in a day (because it was basically at a 30% discount for that day only).  Here, he was doing the same thing, but this time I felt backed into a corner.  I wasn't comfortable with some of the things that he had said & felt like I wasn't going to have control over how the wedding looked & my voice wouldn't be heard, which isn't okay, especially when you have to pay that much money for something. 

Since I  had to make a decision about the offer by the end of the day or it would expire, I decided to call Jeff at The Garden Gate to see if I could move our January 3rd appointment to that day, with just a couple hours of notice.  He readily agreed, so that afternoon I headed over to Monroe for an estimate with him.

Jeff had so many great ideas, & I felt like my voice was heard loud & clear with him.  He would take what I said & give me several different options that would fit when I wanted.  He also got me to open up to a few other things that I had been hesitant about before, but loved after we discussed them.  It was a great meeting, & I couldn't have been more pleased about feeling so reassured about a florist.  When we had finished talking ideas, Jeff crunched the numbers too.  Again, they were about double the budget.  This time, though, he sat with me (instead of disappearing into a back room) figuring out things that we could cut out.  Within about 10 minutes, we had reduced the cost down to what Beyond Details was going to charge me & I feel like we didn't have to sacrifice any quality at all for the reductions in price.  He was more than willing to tell me where we could cut corners, & where I could make the things that we would be using, to save money; Jakob had not been quite as "for" this idea.  Jeff was also enthusiastic about using the glass pieces that I have been collecting as part of the wedding, another thing that did not seem to sit well with Beyond Details.  Overall, I felt like Jeff had a better idea of what I wanted & was able to translate that vision into real, tangible suggestions & he was much more professional & helpful (our impromptu appointment took well over an hour, which he did not seem to mind at all). 

I haven't confirmed to Jeff that I will be using TGG because I haven't told Jakob that I won't be using BD.  I'm just not good at "pleasant" confrontation on a personal or professional level.  I also don't want to hurt Jakob's feelings because he will still be there for our rehearsal dinner & wedding, making sure everything goes smoothly at the venue.  At least when I do get the courage to turn him down, I'll be able to do it over email :) haha!  More to come about Christmas later.  It deserves a post all its own as well!
